How to decorate your log home for the holidays

Log homes are one of the most natural and beautiful backdrops for winter’s snow and festive holiday decorations. What really makes them great to decorate is that they don’t need much at all. No matter if you love lots of sparkle – or a few simple touches – you’ve already got the perfect setting when starting with a log home.  Here are a few fun ideas, perfect for all tastes and budgets, to help you get started on your holiday decor for the season.

First, start with your tree. Nature provides the best trees, so make it a fun outing for all to find, cut and bring home the perfect tree for your log home. (Be sure to check on local regulations, especially if you live in protected forest areas.) Now decorate your tree and make it unique by using things you find in nature mixed with a little creativity, like:

  • Pinecones with a bit of glitter
  • Bows make out of scraps of burlap, flannel and plaid
  • Deer antlers harvested from long forest hikes
  • Dried red berries (keep these out of reach of small children or pets, though)

**Always remember to set trees and flammable materials a safe distance away from your wood stove or fireplace to avoid fire danger.

Next, the fireplace. Many cabins have fireplaces as well, which offer another great location that only needs a few fun touches to make it holiday-ready. Things like:

  • Line the mantle with pine branches, pine cones and red berries
  • Make a simple garland using pine cones and scraps of burlap and flannel
  • Line the mantle with mini Christmas trees made of pine branches inserted into sand-filled burlap bags for the base.
  • Hang stockings from deer antler prongs

Inside your home, you can add fun touches in places like coffee tables, bathroom counters and kitchen islands by inviting nature inside and giving it a little bling. Spray pinecones and large acorns with white, silver or gold paint, cover in glitter and place in a bowl or on trays around the house. You can also arrange them in glass hurricane lanterns, wooden bowls or birch baskets around your home. Kick it up a notch by adding gold or silver candles, garland, bronze reindeer, rustic bells and twinkle lights.

Your cabin exterior can sparkle too, with only a few simple touches. Highlight the natural rustic exterior of your log cabin with outdoor-approved twinkle lights on the eaves. Drape pine boughs and other forest greenery around doors and windows, with winter berries and buffalo plaid bows tucked in for a bit of bright color.
